How to Verify a Diamond Certificate (IGI & GIA)

Why certification matters

A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is the only independent proof of what you are buying. Without it, you are relying entirely on the retailer's claims about the stone's carat weight, colour, clarity, and cut.

The certificate is issued by an independent gemological laboratory — not by the retailer or the diamond manufacturer. The lab examines the stone, measures its properties, and records them on a numbered report. This number is your guarantee that the grades are legitimate.

If a retailer sells you a "1ct G VS1 diamond" but the certificate says "0.92ct H VS2", you are being misled. If there is no certificate at all, you have no way to verify the claims. This is why certification verification is the single most important step before buying any diamond.

Never buy a diamond — natural or lab-grown — without a certificate from a recognised independent lab. The two most widely accepted labs worldwide are GIA and IGI. Other reputable labs include HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) and GCAL.

IGI vs GIA: which is better?

Both IGI and GIA are legitimate, internationally recognised gemological laboratories. They use similar grading methodologies and both produce reliable reports. However, there are differences worth understanding.

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is considered the gold standard for natural diamond grading. It was founded in 1931, created the 4Cs grading system, and is known for conservative, strict grading. If a stone is graded G colour VS1 by GIA, you can be confident in that assessment. GIA also grades lab-grown diamonds but is less commonly used for them in the Australian market.

IGI (International Gemological Institute) has become the dominant certification body for lab-grown diamonds globally. Founded in 1975, IGI has a reputation for being slightly more generous than GIA in colour and clarity grading — meaning a stone that IGI grades as G VS1 might be graded H VS2 by GIA. This is a generalisation, not a rule, but it is widely discussed in the industry.

What does this mean for you? If you are comparing two diamonds, make sure they are graded by the same lab. An IGI G VS1 and a GIA G VS1 may not be the same quality. If they are priced the same, the GIA-graded stone is likely the better value because GIA's grades tend to be stricter.

How to verify an IGI certificate

Verifying an IGI certificate takes about 30 seconds:

Step 1. Find the certificate number. It is printed on the top of the IGI report and is usually also listed on the retailer's product page. Lab-grown diamond certificates from IGI typically start with "LG" followed by digits (e.g. LG12345678).

Step 2. Go to IGI's verification page at igi.org/verify-your-report. Enter the report number in the search field.

Step 3. Compare the details on the IGI website with what the retailer has listed. Check: carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade, cut grade, shape, and measurements. They should match exactly.

Step 4. If anything does not match — even by one grade — contact the retailer and ask for an explanation before purchasing.

How to verify a GIA certificate

GIA verification is equally straightforward:

Step 1. Find the GIA report number. It is a multi-digit number printed on the report and often laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle (the thin edge around the circumference).

Step 2. Go to GIA's Report Check page at gia.edu/report-check. Enter the report number.

Step 3. GIA will display the full grading report including the 4Cs, measurements, fluorescence, and a plotting diagram showing the location of inclusions. Compare every detail with the retailer's claims.

Step 4. GIA reports for natural diamonds also include an origin disclosure. Lab-grown diamonds graded by GIA are clearly identified as "Laboratory-Grown Diamond" on the report. If a retailer claims a stone is natural but the GIA report says lab-grown, walk away.

What to check on the certificate

When you have the certificate in front of you — either physical or digital — verify these specific items:

Carat weight. Should match the retailer's listing exactly, down to two decimal places. "1ct" means 1.00ct, not 0.90ct. A 0.95ct stone marketed as "1ct" is misrepresentation.

Colour grade. Graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Each grade step represents a real difference in value. The difference between G and H is subtle visually but can be 5–10% in price.

Clarity grade. Graded from FL (flawless) to I3 (heavily included). VS2 and above are considered "eye-clean" — no inclusions visible without magnification.

Cut grade. For round diamonds, this is graded Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. Cut has the biggest impact on how a diamond looks. Always insist on Excellent or Very Good.

Fluorescence. Some diamonds glow under UV light. Strong fluorescence can make a diamond appear hazy in daylight and typically reduces value. None or Faint is preferred.

Origin disclosure. The certificate should clearly state whether the stone is natural or lab-grown. GIA labels lab-grown diamonds explicitly. IGI uses separate report formats for natural and lab-grown.

Common red flags

Be cautious if you encounter any of these:

No certificate at all. If a retailer sells diamonds without independent certification, you have no way to verify quality. "In-house grading" or "certified by our gemologist" is not the same as an independent GIA or IGI report. In-house grading has no accountability.

Certificate number that doesn't verify. If you enter the certificate number on the lab's website and nothing comes up, the certificate may be fake. Contact the lab directly to confirm.

Specs don't match. If the retailer says "F colour VS1" but the certificate says "G colour VS2", the retailer is misrepresenting the stone. This happens more often than you would expect.

Unfamiliar lab. Certificates from labs you have never heard of may use inflated grades. Stick to GIA, IGI, HRD, or GCAL. If in doubt, check whether the lab is recognised by international gemological associations.

Laser inscription mismatch. GIA and IGI can laser-inscribe the certificate number on the diamond's girdle. If the inscription does not match the certificate, the stone may have been swapped.

What to do if something doesn't match

If you find a discrepancy between the retailer's claims and the certificate:

1. Contact the retailer first. It may be a genuine listing error. Ask them to correct the listing or provide an explanation. Get their response in writing (email).

2. Contact the grading lab. If the certificate number does not verify at all, contact the lab directly. GIA and IGI both have customer service channels for fraud inquiries.

3. Do not purchase. If the retailer cannot satisfactorily explain the discrepancy, do not buy the stone. It is better to walk away from a deal than to pay thousands for a misgraded diamond.

4. Report it. If you believe a retailer is systematically misrepresenting diamond grades, consider reporting it to the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) or your state's consumer affairs body. Misrepresentation of gemstone quality is a breach of Australian Consumer Law.
